Cross Polarized photography

” Every day is a school day ”

I’ve heard about cross polarized light some time ago. I knew the results of it over plastic stuff, the cool colours and etc. And thought I knew more or less all about it….silly guy.

Back home, in Brazil, was just impossible to get a sheet of polarized film sheet. But in Vancouver they are supper accessible, and during one of my studio times, decided to give it a go.

  • I knew: Polarized lighting —- object ——> Pola filter = Cool picture. That was my knowledge.

I decided to try it with a shine metal object, sure that I would get all those crazy LDS colours over it.  In a white background! Silly again.

I didn;t know, but I was trying to light the key with the polarized lighting; which is very different from thing, considering that I was looking for the colours..

After moving lights and lighting angles, I’ve got it. Suddenly, the silver key became BLUE!  You can really sees it, but the camera does! I you’re wearing polarized glasses, you  can  see it.

Playing around and moving filter..and than the silver, blue key, turned BLACK! Jet black. And that stayed in my mind…

Doing some research, I’ve found this  LINK

Where I found thins intriguing image:

More googling and ended up finding a bunch of images with some crazy lighting. The pictures were on Shuterstock, and with a uncommon keyword #polarizedlight

Seems that the lighting block all the shines and reflections of macro pictures; and adding lots of texture to it!

So, could I make the background jet black, the same way I did with the key?!

Decided to try!

It’s funny that what happens is the background it totally independent from what happens in the ” surface”!

Let see what I can make out of this =D

 News coming up!!!
